There are many methods of metal processing, among which cutting is the most common and widely used one. The use of cutting fluid plays an important role in metal cutting. In the process of metal cutting, great friction occurs between tool and workpiece, the interface between tool and chip, which increases cutting force, cutting heat and workpiece deformation, leads to tool wear, and also affects the quality of workpiece machined surface.
The function of cutting fluid is mainly embodied in the following four aspects:
1. Cutting fluid has cooling effect
Because of the self-cooling ability of cutting fluid, its direct cooling effect not only reduces cutting temperature, reduces tool wear and prolongs tool life, but also prevents the thermal expansion of workpiece, the influence of warpage on processing accuracy, and the cooling of machined surface to inhibit the generation of thermal deterioration layer.
2. Cutting fluid has lubricating effect
The lubrication function of cutting fluid refers to its ability to reduce friction, wear, melting and adhesion between rake face and chips, and between flank face and workpiece surface. Under certain conditions, good cutting fluid can reduce the friction between the front and back of the tool, thus reducing power, increasing tool life and obtaining better surface quality. What is more important is to reduce the chances of producing debris tumors (knife tumors).
3. Cutting fluid has cleaning function
In the cutting process, fine chips, metal powder and grinding wheel granular powder (especially when processing cast iron, honing and fine grinding) are adhering to the cutter, two-piece machined surface and the moving parts of the machine tool, resulting in mechanical abrasion and wear, resulting in deterioration of the surface quality of the workpiece, tool life and machine accuracy. Therefore, cutting fluid is required to have a good cleaning effect, and a certain pressure is often applied in order to improve the scouring ability and wash away fine chips, sand grains and binder powder in time.
4. Cutting Fluid has Antirust Function
In the process of machining, the workpiece and machine tool are corroded by the surrounding media such as moisture, oxygen, sweat, acid and dust in the air. In high temperature, high humidity season or humid area, this kind of rust is particularly prominent. At the same time, according to the long turnover time of metal parts processed in our country, cutting fluid itself must not only not produce rust on machine tools, cutting tools and workpieces, but also have good rust-proof performance for metal products.
Cutting fluid plays an important role in metal cutting because of its good comprehensive performance. Reasonable selection of cutting fluid can prolong tool life, ensure and improve machining accuracy, prevent workpiece and machine tool corrosion or rust, improve cutting efficiency, reduce energy consumption and production costs.
